Best Restaurant Wedding Venue 2017

We are delighted to announce that The Red Door Country House has won best Restaurant Wedding Venue 2017 at the recent Weddings Online Awards. This is the fourth year in a row that the Inishowen restaurant has brought the award back to Donegal.

The winners were announced on Monday February 20th at Clontarf Castle, during a glitzy black tie gala ceremony. The country’s top wedding businesses gathered to celebrate the winners of Ireland’s leading wedding awards.

Over 30,000 couples voted for their favourite suppliers and venues in a range of categories, which were then judged by a panel of digital marketing professionals and wedding industry experts. Judges this year were Sara Kennedy, sales & marketing specialist and wedding blogger for, Mark Richardson, Ireland’s leading sales and communication skills expert, Ciamh McCrory, digital & communications guru and Laura Holland, Entertainment Editor for

As part of the judging process, The Red Door Country House was asked about a particular wedding that was different in some way in the past year. Immediately, Susan and Karen’s wedding stood out and we recalled their May wedding in the gardens of the country house. This was our second same sex marriage (ceremony and reception) since gay marriage became legalised in Ireland. However, it was the first for so many of the guests who had known Karen and Susan for decades.

It was also our first full outdoor wedding ceremony since this also became legal in Ireland. Previously, couples had to legally get married in a registry office or similar before their outdoor ceremony. The Irish weather left some concerns for the team at The Red Door as we knew how special the day was for the couple and how much they wanted to incorporate the outdoors and the views of Lough Swilly into their ceremony. A marquee and outdoor seating was erected to help shelter the guests from any wind or rain during the ceremony. Although, on the day itself, the weather was fine, that extra bit of shelter never goes amiss in Ireland!

Susan and Karen paved the way for many more other outdoor ceremonies in 2016 and 2017 after we shared the photos on social media and their story played a part in our recent award win. We thank them and all our wedding couples for choosing The Red Door Country House as their venue and wish them all the best for the future.
